NATIONAL LIFE SAVING AWARD GIVEN TO CASINO ARIZONA SECURITY OFFICERS
Employees Honored After Saving Life of a Guest in Cardiac Arrest Last December

SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY – Two employees from Casino Arizona were recently recognized as recipients of a national Life Saving Award from the American Police Hall of Fame. Karl Weiss and Michelle Zocco, both security officers and emergency medical technicians at Casino Arizona, were recognized with the award after saving the life of a patron who had suffered cardiac arrest while visiting the Casino last December.

Issued to individuals whose actions save the life of a fellow citizen in an emergency, the Life Saver Award is given to deserving people across the country. As beneficiaries of the award, Weiss and Zocco received a Life Saving Medal to wear on their uniforms as well as a customized plaque. Casino Arizona President and CEO Jon Jenkins presented these items to the officers at a quarterly meeting on April 29. During the presentation, Jenkins expressed admiration at the duo’s ability to “bring a man back to life!”

“Saving a life is the most important thing for which a person can be honored, and we are incredibly fortunate to have two such talented individuals at Casino Arizona,” said Jenkins. “I was amazed by their ability to react quickly and calmly in the most dire of situations and cannot express enough gratitude for their decisive actions that day.”

That day was December 26, 2007, when a 60-year-old Casino Arizona 101 & McKellips guest collapsed on the gaming floor as a result of a possible cardiac arrest. Weiss and Zocco responded in less than a minute and immediately went into action. They quickly administered the life-saving measures – including chest compressions, ventilation and automated external defibrillation – to the guest who was code blue and not breathing. They were able to revive and monitor him until an ambulance arrived.

“The service of emergency medical technician personnel is often under-valued. At Casino Arizona, we pride ourselves in providing superior service to our patrons and have emergency medical technicians on staff to provide initial treatment in the event of a medical emergency,” said Bruce Tunnicliff, safety and security director for Casino Arizona.

Casino Arizona nominated Weiss and Zocco for the Life Saving Award for what they called an “awesome example of leadership.”
